Schwing Innovations is a New Orleans engineering practice providing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, fire alarm, and life safety engineering. The firm carries the full MEP package, with electrical and structural disciplines through established partner firms, and serves projects across the Gulf South and nationally with its principal licensed in seven states.
Fire protection is also a standalone practice. Few engineers in Louisiana hold a Professional Engineer license in Fire Protection, and many engineering firms carry projects that have complicated special hazards or simply where the fire protection, fire alarm, or life safety scope is outside of their realm of expertise. Schwing Innovations supports those firms as a specialty consultant, from code analysis and equivalency requests to special hazards protection to hydraulic calculations, sprinkler, and fire alarm design, working as an extension of their team.
Projects range from new construction to renovations of existing and historic buildings, and from a full MEP design to a single fire protection question that needs an expert answer. In every case, the engineer who scopes the work is the engineer who designs it, seals it, and answers for it at plan review and inspection.

Principal
Michael Schwing founded Schwing Innovations in 2024 and leads the practice as its principal engineer. He is a dual-licensed Professional Engineer in Mechanical and Fire Protection Engineering and one of only a handful of engineers based in Louisiana licensed as a Professional Engineer in both disciplines. The firm delivers mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, fire alarm, and life safety engineering in house, and carries the full MEP package for architects, owners, developers, and contractors across the Gulf South and nationally, with electrical, structural, and other disciplines provided through established partner firms.
His technical practice covers the mechanical and plumbing side of a project from load modeling through construction administration. On the fire protection side he designs sprinkler, standpipe, fire pump, and special-hazard suppression systems; engineers addressable fire alarm, voice evacuation, and mass notification in house; and provides life safety and code consulting that reduces complex code language to its intent and carries variances and alternative-means documentation through review with the State Fire Marshal and local authorities.
Michael served on the 2026 Louisiana State Uniform Construction Code Council IMC/IPC/IFGC Code Review Committee for the 2024 I-Codes and serves as Qualifier for Fire Protection Systems for a licensed Louisiana fire protection contractor, holding the technical qualification under which that contractor's sprinkler work is licensed and performed. Having worked on the code side, the design side, and the installation side of the discipline, he produces documents that account for what an installer will actually build and what a plan reviewer will actually ask.
Before founding the firm, he spent over a decade as a mechanical and fire protection engineer with consulting firms ranging from local practices to national A/E firms, delivering projects for federal, healthcare, laboratory, university, cultural, worship, industrial, and commercial clients across the United States, with particular depth in the phased renovation of occupied and historic buildings. A New Orleans native, he holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Orleans.
